Cascade Volunteer Work Day

  • 11 Jun 2016

  • Foolhen Way Trail 001 on the Cascade Ranger District

Volunteer Work Day

Where: Foolhen Way Trail 001 on the Cascade Ranger District.
When: June 11th 9 am at the Dollar way trailhead. I want to get as much done early in the day while it is cooler.
Why: To reclaim trail that no one has ridden in 30 years.
Last year it was brought to my attention that we there is a trail on the Cascade Ranger District (Foolhen Way 001) that has not been used by any recreationists in a long time, but is open to motorcycle use. To address this problem I went looking for the trail and flagged it as I went, while having the IDPR Trail Rangers clearing behind me. Due to a lot of work, time limitations and difficulty finding the trail, we were only able to get two (2) miles of the 5.6 mile trail cleared.

This year I would like to get the Foolhen Way trail cleared and open for use! To do that I need several volunteers willing to brush a  50 yard patch of brush and clear several trees and downfall.   June 11th.  The Trail Rangers will be working one day to get this 5.6 mile trail reopened to the OHV public. This trail has not been used in around 30 years. I have already spent several hours flagging the lost route and still have 2 miles left to flag.

Who could participate: Advanced intermediate or better motorcycle skills are needed as there are some fairly difficult sections in the trail that need to be navigated.

What to Bring:
·         Your motorcycle and hiking boots, gloves and safety goggles, chaps if you are using a chainsaw.
·         Chainsaw
·         Polaski if you have one
·         Plenty of saw fuel
·         Saw sharpening kit
·         Lunch, Plenty of water, a water purifier, snacks.

Work to be done: Mostly log removal, intermittent heavy brush patches, some digging

If you get there late: Follow the pink ribbon.

Directions:
From Home Depot off of State St and HWY 55 to Davis Creek Ln. between Cascade and Donnelly. Head west as you were going to the hot spring (Don’t Stop there) which is the 498 road. Travel on the 498 road to 402 road and take a right, Travel down the 402 road for 7 miles to the Dollar way trailhead.
